Barn Island Wildlife Management Area - Sentinel Monitoring

Miller and Egler Photostations - established August 25, 1947.

Photostation 13. The 1947 photograph does not exist but Dr. Niering photographed the Headquarters border in 1953 and "retakes" in 1974 suggesting this is a photostation. Note the two large boulders in the photographs - the rightmost boulder is the location of station 12 (looking into impoundment 1).

Photo top (Niering 1953), photocenter (Niering 1974) and photobottom (Rozsa 2015). 1953: Brown background Panicum virgatum narrowband Juncus dark green, front of rock - S. patens lighter green; Foreground Spartina glabra - low brown giving way to salt panne. 1974: there is no annotation on this slide but note the presence of a prominent Panicum fen and the forest is taller. In 1983, the Panicum fen present. In 2015, the Panicum fen is absent and supports Iva frutscens. The adjacent forest is the Nyssa forested wetland which on its seaward slope has an understory of Juncus gerardii. On the right side of this photograph behind the two large boulders, the clump of Nyssa trees are dead.
