Barn Island Wildlife Management Area - Sentinel Monitoring

Photostations

On August 25, 1947, Dr. Frank Egler hired a private photographer (J. Scaylea) to take photographs at 34 strategic locations to record the vegetation condition at Barn Island. Six photographs are missing. Digital copies of the photographs are filed in the Data Catalogue under the section called photos. These permanent photostations could be relocated in the future and new photographs taken to record vegetation change. Such photos were taken by both Coleman (1978) in the natural marshes and Hebard (1980) in the impoundments. No map showing the locations of the photostations has been found but Hebard apparently took the collection of photographs in the field and annotated the book containing the negatives. Using these notes, a GIS shapefile has been created and in 2014 priority was given to relocating the photostations in the natural marsh.
